What is the Cynosure ICON 1540?
The ICON 1540 is a non-ablative Fractionated Erbium laser that operates in the 1540nm wavelength spectrum.
Non-ablative treatments involve treating the deeper parts of the skin without removing any part of the top layer. These lasers have fewer side effects and a shorter healing time.
The ICON 1540 laser delivers light to the skin through an array of high precision microbeams that penetrate the skin deep into the dermis, creating narrow, deep columns of skin coagulation surrounded by healthy, untreated skin. The skin then repairs itself, and old, sun-damaged skin is replaced with new, younger, healthier skin.
Lasers that deliver fractionated light are generally safer and produce consistent results.
What is fractional laser skin resurfacing?
Fractional laser skin resurfacing can be used to treat a number of skin conditions, with minimal downtime. The ICON 1540 laser delivers heat to the deeper layers of the skin, which initiates the body's natural healing process to promote new collagen and elastin production. The new collagen and elastin help to improve skin tone and texture, while also helping to revolumise the skin.
Fractional skin resurfacing with the 1540nm erbium laser is much safer and avoids the side effects and complications associated with non-fractionated lasers.
What downtime is involved?
Most patients experience minimal downtime, with some mild redness and swelling for a few days. Since these treatments are fractionated and less invasive, 3-5 sessions are generally recommended for full results, performed every 4-6 weeks.
The Icon 1540 provides safe minimal downtime for treatments including:
Skin rejuvenation. Improve skin texture, tone and other irregularities of the skin. Reverse signs of aging, such as fine lines, wrinkles, and sun damage. Experience brighter, tighter and smoother skin.
Acne Scarring. There are many treatment options for acne scarring, however depressed acne scarring responds best to laser treatment.
Surgical or Traumatic Scars. The Icon 1540 can improve scarring.
Stretch Marks. The Icon 1540 can improve the appearance of stretch marks due to pregnancy, growth spurts, or fluctuations in weight, which are best treated with a laser.
When will I notice results?
Many patients will see a positive change within 3-8 weeks after the first treatment. Optimal results usually occur after 2 to 3 months, which allows for complete healing and replacement of new collagen and elastin.
Results vary with individual factors and can be enhanced using recommended home products and excellent sun protection.
How many treatments will I need?
The ICON 1540 treatments are more effective if performed in a series of sessions.
Each session treats approximately 20 – 25 % of the skin and clinical studies indicate that an effective treatment regimen involves 3 to 5 treatments, 4-6 weeks apart.
Certain conditions, such as severe acne scarring may require more treatments for optimal results.
What to expect after treatment?
During the first 24 hours after treatment, the skin may feel mildly sunburned, sensitive, and somewhat swollen.
Over the next few days, the skin may appear slightly bronzed, which can be easily covered with makeup. There may be some flaking, which can be improved by using a moisturiser.
What areas of the face and body can the Icon 1540 be used on?
The ICON 1540 can be used on scars and stretch marks anywhere on the face or body. However, when used to address fine lines and skin texture, the best results are seen when used on the face.
What kind of acne scars can the Icon 1540 be used on?
The ICON 1540 works best for shallower acne scars, such as rolling scars. It works by heating the deeper layers of the skin to promote the growth of new collagen in the dermis.
