Skin Cancer Check

Frequently asked questions

What is a skin cancer check?

The purpose of the examination is to examine your skin for suspicious lesions which could be skin cancers.

Do I have to undress?

You have to undress down to your underwear to have your skin examined. If you are concerned by any lesions covered by your underwear that you want the doctor to check, please let them know. If you feel uncomfortable about undressing down to your underwear, you can request a more limited check concentrating on any areas of concern. Many patients feel more comfortable wearing a bikini/swimming togs.

What equipment is used?

Our skin doctors will examine your skin using a handheld surface microscope (Dermatoscope).

The clinic also boasts the latest computer-assisted diagnostic equipment and skin cancer detection technology. Using our Canfield Total Body Photography IntelliStudio Automated Total Body Mapping System we are able to capture studio-quality images to provide a record of your skin.

What is Total Body Photography & Do I Need It?

Total body Photography (TBP) is an important tool in the detection of melanoma skin cancers. It is recommended for those people who have a high risk of developing melanoma, such as those people with a family history, or a personal history of multiple moles or melanoma.

The photographs can be used as a baseline for future comparisons, allowing earlier detection of any changes that may indicate melanoma, and because of this we highly recommend TBP to all our new patients and those deemed as “high risk”. The service is however available to anyone attending our clinic for a full skin check.

TBP is not a replacement for a regular skin examination with a qualified and experienced medical professional. The photography is non-invasive, although you will be asked to remove your clothing.

The photographs are taken by one of our nurses prior to your full skin examination with your doctor, and you will be asked to arrive 15 minutes prior to your skin check appointment.

We recommend that you attend your appointment make-up free, although we can provide cleanser and wipes if you arrive from work.

We have the latest in skin cancer detection technology, the Canfield Total Body Photography IntelliStudio Automated Total Body Mapping System.

How long does it take?

Skin Check appointments are booked for 15 minutes, however, if biopsies are taken, the appointment will take longer.

If you have booked Total Body Photography we request that you arrive 15 minutes early to allow the nurse time to take your photographs.

What happens if the doctor finds something?

If a suspicious lesion is found, a small biopsy may be taken during the appointment - depending on the time available. Alternatively, you may be asked to return another day.

If a surgical excision is required, you will need to book a longer appointment, this will be a separate appointment, and will be discussed with you prior to booking.
